how can we cheat the power meter of the house to lower electrical bill?

The way the power meters measure the amount of electricity entering your home is through the use of eddy currents, these are magnetic fields produced within non magnetic materials through the flow of electrons, which opose the magnetic field which induced them.

An interesting experiment to demonstrate these is to take a long piece of aluminium pipe and drop a small magnet down the middle of it, the magnet will fall very slowly, not because it is attracted to the aluminium, but due to it creating an oposing magnetic field as current flows around the ring of the tube.

In your power meter is a very thin disc or ring of aluminium (non magnetic), which experiences a magnetic field due to the electricty entering the house (the strength of the field is determined by the amount of current flowing). This magnetic field causes the electrons within the aluminium to move, in turn generating their own magnetic field.

The two magnetic fields opose one another (if they supported each other we would have a free source of energy) and so the aluminium ring is rotated as electricity flows into the house. The power company then simply measures the number of rotations of this wheel to calculate your bill.

To cheat the power company - 100% illegal - you simply need to stop this ring from moving, two ways this would be possible are through opening up the(usually perspex) box and physically holding the ring still. Although any tampering with the box will land you a hefty fine. The second way is to use external alternating magnetic fields to directly effect the speed at which the aluminium ring spins - quite difficult to do in practice and again liable to land you with a hefty fine when caught out.

How to Find Computer Virus

Computer viruses are small applications that contaminate files inside your computer and are capable of transferring from one computer to another. The purpose of the virus is to spread and corrupt a computer’s system. Infected computers start to slow down until the entire system eventually crash or malfunction. Antivirus programs are sold all over the world to fight virus infestation that has now found a way to disguise itself to infiltrate low level computer security. To find a virus, you will need to have an antivirus program.

Materials Needed:
- Internet connection
- Antivirus
Step 1
Install an antivirus program. Secure a licensed antivirus program from a reputable antivirus company. Antivirus programs are available online via downloading or offline via CD or DVD copy.
Step 2
After installing your antivirus program run an immediate update of the software. Antivirus updates are important as some antivirus employs signatures to recognize viruses. Signature is a traditional process to identify malicious files. It identifies viruses by checking the contents of a file or a program against its data base of viruses. Updating your antivirus program would also mean updating your virus database of the newly identified viruses. Nowadays, well known antivirus companies also employ heuristics to identify viruses and other malicious files. Heuristic is a process in which an antivirus program analyzes files and programs command lines to be able to identify if they are malicious and harmful.
Step 3
Another way to find a computer virus is to check manually. Go to Control Panel. Click on the Start then select Control Panel from the Start Menu.
Step 4
Select Add or Remove Programs from the Control Panel window. Check on the list of programs installed in your computer.
Step 5
Note the names of the programs you are not familiar with.
Step 6
Check the program’s name on the Internet. Research about its functions and possible effects on your system.
Step 7
If this file was indeed malicious delete it at once. If you are not sure if a file is malicious do not delete anything as it might affect your computer’s system and cause even greater damage.
Step 8
Another way to find a virus in your computer is to check the Windows Start-up folder. To go to Windows Start-up folder select My Computer. Select Drive C: from My Computer.
Step 9
Select the Documents and Settings folder in Drive C: Go to the All Users folder in the Documents and Settings. Inside the Documents and Settings click on the Start Menu folder. Check the programs inside the Start Menu folder. Identify listed programs that you do not recognize and research on them. This way you would be able to find out which files are harmful or a part of your computer’s system.

Tips to improve your typing speed

Typing is a major skill that most people need to use today. As the use of computers becomes more and more important in every profession, people are required to type as part of their jobs.
However, most people never had proper training in typing. This gives rise to an interesting situation, where computer users have to spend large amounts of their time "fighting" the keyboard, instead of using it effectively.
Despite this situation, it is not as difficult as it seems to achieve good skill as a typist. It is just a matter of some training and looking for the necessary information that can be found in the Internet, for example.
Here are some tips that I believe can be helpful in improving your typing speed.

Fast typing tips #1: Learn the correct position of fingers in the keyboard

You can improve a lot if you stop using the "one finger method". We have five fingers in each hand, and they can be used to improve the speed of your typing. Several web sites have charts with the correct position for each hand, just use them and practice even a little each day.

Fast typing tips #2: Learn to type without looking at the keyboard

This is first step to mastering the art of typing. You can start doing this after you learn the proper position of the fingers. Using this technique you will be able to concentrate on the result on the screen, and not in where your fingers are going. This can provide a great increase in you speed.

Avoid correcting mistakes immediately

One of the things that decrease your speed is the urge to fix typing problems as they happen. If you get used to continue typing even if you see some mistakes you will learn faster, because you will be in continuous practice. This will also decrease your error rate, because now you will be focused on doing it right, not on fixing your typos.

Try to type faster for small periods of time

A good exercise is to try to type at maximum speed during short periods of time, even if you have a few mistakes. The goal is to increase your response time, so that you can continue typing faster even after the exercise.
When you type faster, your hands start to adapt to that speed level with time. You will make a lot of mistakes at the beginning, because you are not trained to type at high speed. However, consider this just training for your hands. When you return to normal speeds, you will see that you have improved your accuracy and speed.

Conclusion

Typing fast and accurately is an important skill. Using these tips regularly, you will see that your speed will improve steadily. This skill you help you to be more productive and finish your work faster than you are currently doing.

Spam email, junk mail, how to stop it

Spam email or junk email is unwanted email received by the recipient. Almost every internet user will have received emails promising millions of  dollars from corrupt politicians. A lot of  time is wasted sorting through the email received and deleting spam email. By mistake, important mail also gets deleted at times. Many people use email programs with a  spam filter, but this is not 100% accurate. While it is not possible to totally eliminate spam email, you can keep junk emails manageable.
How to fix it
1. Use different email ids for different uses. With people you know very well, you can give your main email id, for business purposes, you can create a separate id.

2. Sometimes your computer may be infected by a Virus, trojan or spyware. Whenever you are connected to the internet, thousands of  emails may be automatically sent without your knowledge.
Sometimes, your PC may not have any viruses or spyware. But if a friends computer is infected and your email id is in the address book, you will receive junk mail.

3. When you join any forum, mailing list or post on a message board, create a temporary free email id at yahoo, hotmail, rediffmail or other free email service. Many mailing list owners may resell your email id.  Bots crawl message boards, gathering emails. If you receive too much spam, you can simply stop using the email id.

4. Remove your email id from your website. For contacting you, visitors to your website can use the contact form on the website. Also use a private who is service as far as possible for domain registration services.

5. Use a spam filtering software to separate out junk mail, but ensure that you have final control over the emails which are deleted. Most spam filters mark messages as spam based on certain words which are commonly used by spammers.

Lost or forgot password, retrieve password

Most important information, access to settings on a computer are password protected to prevent access by hackers and casual users of  the computer. Many times, the user forgets the password. Some types of  passwords can be easily reset like email passwords if you have provided the necessary information during signup, while others are more difficult to reset.
How to find out  forgotten or lost passwords:
1. BIOS password : Disconnect the battery on the motherboard for 10 seconds, and reconnect it back. The default settings will be loaded in the BIOS.
2. ISP password: Many ISP's have a secret question which will allow you to reset the password. If this does not work, you can also contact the tech support. The tech support may require additional validation information. Instructions for resetting the password are usually sent to the alternate email id provided at the time of  registration.
A similar procedure is to be followed for login based website. For paid subscription based websites, you may have to contact the webmaster by phone or email.
3.For resetting password of any user with a local account on a Windows NT4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 based system,  use the offline NT password and Registry editor
For resetting the password in an active directory, you can refer to this password recovery guide . This guide cannot be accessed using Internet Explorer, you will need to install an alternate browser like Firefox on your computer.

Another free utility used to reset the password is the live Linux distribution CD Austrumi
Download Austrumi Ver 0.9.2   from Sourceforge.

If  you forgot the administrator's password for Windows NT or some versions of  Windows 2000  - you can try this alternate logon trick for password recovery
Most free password cracking tools are Linux boot disks or CDs which read the registry. However the process may cause data loss.
List of various free tools for password recovery (the list seems to have been compiled 2 years ago, so check for the latest version)

4. If  nothing works, you can try to guess the password using brute force/ dictionary attack on your system. This can be very time consuming.

Iexplorer.exe application, CiceroUIwndFrame error

If  you are surfing the internet for a long time and visiting websites with flash, animation or activeX, you may get the message titled - Iexplorer.exe application error or CiceroUiwndFrame error.   This occurs whenever you are trying  to close down Internet explorer, you  get that message error which reads:
Instruction at the 0x5xccccdd referenced memory the 0x000b001c memory could not be read.
These error messages are usually displayed when you are connected to the internet for a longer time - about 2-3 hours. Internet surfing also becomes very slow before this message is displayed . Some users have also reported that internet explorer hangs.

How to fix it
For CiceroUiwndFrame error which is due to a problem in CiceroUiwndFrame, the speed and handwriting recognition part of  Office XP. To uninstall it
1. Go to Control panel ----> add and remove programs
2. Select Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage and click on "change" option
3.  Select Office shared features ---> Alternative user input --->Speech and Handwriting Recognition . Deselect both the options

For Iexplorer.exe application error, the error may be due to faulty Add-ons
1.  In the Internet Explorer menu, go to "Tools->Manage Add-ons"
2. You will get a list of all the add-ons loaded for Internet Explorer. Add-on software where no publisher is specified could be spyware.
3. Select each add-on and disable it. If any particular add-on is essential, you may keep it enabled and check the problem persists. If there is no problem, you can continue with the add-on, else you may have to remove all add-ons.

Delete files, erase data permanently

Due to privacy and security concerns, most people wish to delete  and files from their computer. Usually this is simple, but at times you can face problems. If  you selling your hard disk, you may wish to delete all files . Since most users use their computer while they are logged in as administrator, they should be able to delete any file on  their hard drive.

Delete data and program files.
1.Sometimes, if there is an error during installation of a  program, the delete option may not work. In such cases, you start the computer in the safe mode and try to delete files. If even this does not work, go to the MS Dos prompt and try to delete the file.
2. If  a cookie is not getting deleted or changing its name , it could be Spyware and you may have to use Spyware removal tools.
3. Some files infected by viruses cannot be repaired  by antivirus software , so they are quarantined to prevent further problems.
4. For a CDRW disc, data can be erased using software from Nero, Windows Media Player or Adaptec.
5. If a virus cannot be removed easily, formatting the hard disk may be the best option to erase all the data.  However, if a hard disk is formatted many times (300-500 times), it may reduce the life of  the hard drive. A Windows CD is required  for formatting and reinstalling Windows OS.
6. Formatting the hard drive does not securely erase data and if you are giving away your hard drive, data recovery experts may be able to extract personal information from your hard drive. So if  the data has to be permanently erased, an Eraser program can be used, which rewrites the hard drive with random data, so that the data stored originally on the hard drive cannot be recovered. A wipe program will overwrite with random data 7 to 35 times, so that no personal data can be retrieved.
7. When a file is deleted from a hard drive, only the location of the files on the master file table are marked as free. The deleted files remain on the hard disk till they are overwritten by new files.

Delete downloaded files and browsing history

Due to privacy and security concerns, most people wish to delete their surfing history and files from their computer. It also prevents problems due to virus , spyware and increases the computer speed. Usually this is simple, but at times you can face problems.

Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft\Search Assitant\ACMru
Your actual search list is kept there. Delete the actual text used for your searches, nothing else.

Other options for cleaning traces of  online activity are CCleaner  (Free)

System Restore

Usually running a spyware remover program  and anti-virus software  will solve most of the computer problems caused by malware, viruses and software. However some problems can remain especially if some program has not been installed /uninstalled properly on your  computer or a hacker has specifically targeted your computer. In such cases , the problem will be specific to your computer and no generic solution will be available.
 How to fix it:
1. Restart the computer. If this does not work, shut the computer down for at least 5 minutes and then switch it on again. You can also select the last known good configuration during startup to undo changes which are causing problems.
2. If the problem occurs after a new device driver has been installed or an old device driver has been updated, you can roll back the device driver.
My Computer ---->Properties ---->Hardware---->Device Manage----> select hardware------>Properties----> Driver----->Roll back driver

3. Use system restore to undo changes if problems occur - Article from Microsoft Windows XP support . Restore your computer configuration to an earlier stable configuration.  Usually at least one system restore point is created every week, so you can use the latest restore point.
When you start the computer, keep the F8 key pressed, and select the safe mode.
Then you will be given an option to use system restore and select the restore point.
Sometimes, a restore point may be corrupted, you may have to use an older restore point.
Programs which were installed recently may have to be reinstalled.
Also all websites visited  may not be shown in Internet Explorer history after a system restore.
However all data stored on the hard disk - documents , text , graphics files and emails will not be affected and the latest changes will remain saved.
Due to certain viruses, some computers may not have system restore enabled.

4. If  nothing else works, you may have to reformat your hard disk . Reinstall the operating system and software required.

Spyware detection and removal

Often there may be no sign that a computer has been infected by spyware, until the user realizes that important financial information is stolen. It is often difficult to distinguish whether there is a virus problem or it is caused by spyware. Unlike viruses, spyware does not self replicate.

Some of  the signs that your computer is infected by spyware is:
1. You see new toolbars, which you have not installed and pop-ups suddenly appear while surfing the internet.
2. Your browser crashes without any reason
3. Your computer becomes very slow
4. Your home page is changed without your knowledge.
How to fix it:
If there is a problem which could be caused either by spyware or a virus , it is advisable to first run an antivirus program and then run the anti-spyware program.
Get a free antispyware program. Some of  the free antispyware programs available are:
1. Ad-Aware SE Personal from Lavasoft in Google Pack. Free updates and computer has to be scanned manually.
2. Windows Defender (Beta 2) - removes known spyware from the computer
3. Ewido anti-spyware and anti-malware (merged with Grisoft)- now known as AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, full version is free for 30 days, basic version remains free.
4. Spybot - Search and Destroy - it can also clean usage tracks, which is useful if you are sharing your computer
Download the anti spyware software to your computer hard disk and install the software. Get the latest updates from the companies website. For Ad-Aware SE Personal, a new update with the latest definitions is usually available every 15 days.
Run the anti spyware software. If  any spyware or malware is detected, the anti spyware software will ask you if you wish to remove it. Cookies are also removed, so you may have to login again.
To prevent spyware and malware problems in future
1. Install a firewall to protect your computer when you connect to the internet. If you do not wish to purchase a firewall software, enable the default Windows firewall.
2. Most spyware is written for Windows Internet Explorer and by using a browser like Mozilla Firefox, this problem can be avoided.
3. Download software only from reputable sources, file sharing software like Kazaa is distributed with spyware.
4. Avoid joining paid to (PT) , adult , file sharing and other illegal websites,  these computers of visitors to these websites usually get  infected with malware and spy ware.

Virus detection and removal

There may be several signs that a computer has a virus infection . It is often difficult to distinguish whether there is an hardware error or a software problem since viruses are  written to  avoid detection, and to damage your computer.

Some of  the common problems caused by computer viruses are:
1. Sudden system crashes and computer reboots automatically.
2. Application software crashes and random messages are displayed on the monitor.
3. Computer becomes very slow
4. Hard disk data gets corrupted and hard disk will not boot
How to fix it:
If there is a problem which could be caused either by a hardware malfunction or a virus , it is advisable to first run an antivirus program. It is cheaper and easier to solve a problem using free antivirus software.
Get a free antivirus program. Some of  the free antivirus programs available are:
1. Norton Anti Virus Special Edition 2005 from Symantec in Google Pack. Free updates for a period of six months
2. AVG Anti-virus free edition - change the default email scanning option as it slows the system down
3. Avast - can be installed for 60 days, before you register it for free
Download the anti virus software to your computer hard disk and install the software. Get the latest updates from the companies website.
Run the antivirus software, preferably in safe mode. If  any virus is detected, the antivirus software will first try to clean the infected file. If this is not possible, the software will quarantine the file.
To prevent computer virus problems in future
1. Install a firewall to protect your computer when you connect to the internet
2. Do not allow anyone to install software or copy any files to your computer without scanning the software /data with the latest updated anti virus software
3. Never open files with suspicious attachments, especially if they are from strangers. Always request files to be sent as a text attachment.
4. Avoid joining paid to read , adult , file sharing and other illegal websites,  the computers of visitors to these websites usually get  infected with viruses and spy ware.

Blue screen of death

One of  the worst  problems faced by a computer user,  is when a computer with Windows operating system installed on it has a system error and display an error message "Illegal operation" on a blue screen, and the computer has to be restarted to prevent damage to the computer. The computer then has to be restarted, and all the work that was being done is lost.
Unlike startup errors which are indicated by a beeping sound , the blue screen of  death (BSOD) can occur at any time when you are working on your computer, without any warning. For example, it can occur when you are moving data between 2 folders and the data will have just disappeared from your hard disk!
The common causes for the blue screen of  death and the solutions to fix it are as follows:
1. Device driver problems - when new hardware is added to the computer, the device drivers may not be compatible. Try to get the latest updated version of the device driver from the manufacturer website. If it still does not work, remove or uninstall the new hardware and check if the problem continues.
2. New software installed may also cause a problem, so uninstall any new software. Viruses and spy ware can also cause problems, so ensure that you have the latest version of  antivirus software installed and check your computer regularly. How to  remove all spyware, adware  and  run a free antivirus program
3.Hardware problems. Computer components like the CPU, fan, RAM start malfunctioning after some time, especially if you use your computer for more than 10 hours a day.  Computers with AMD Athlon CPU's generate more heat compared to Intel CPU's and so this problem seems to be more common with these computers.
4. A simple configuration change which I made, after which I never faced the problem of  Blue Screen of  Death.
a) In most computers the RAM memory is shared between the system and graphics  - for example ,  for 128MB  , 96 MB is for the system and 32 MB is for graphics (default setting).  Reduce the memory for graphics to the minimum - 8 MB
b) Change the virtual memory settings
My Computer ---->   Properties ----->Advanced ------> Performance -------> Advanced ---------> Virtual  Memory
For paging file size, select custom file size , with initial size 500 MB and final size 1000 MB. Save the settings. You can increase the paging file size further according to the software programs you use.

5. If nothing works, you can always reformat your computer hard disk and reinstall the operating system and software.
